TWENTY

“I’m surprised he’s still drawing breath,” Sabine said, looking down on the battered man the two soldiers dropped on the ground.

“The worm wanted to make a deal. It seems he knows where the Silent Blades have their headquarters,” Talitha said.

“Why would they trust him with that knowledge and let him run free?” Sabine asked, skeptical of the man’s story.

“Well, they didn’t plan on it, or they didn’t realize that he knew where their headquarters was. You see, Eshan here may be a moron, but he also has the added character flaw of being a drunk. When the Blades brought him in, they placed a bag over his head and dragged him through the city and into a building.” Talitha said, pausing to slap Eshan once more.

“As Eshan was hauled through the building, he could hear someone manhandling a drunk out of the place. Eshan recognized the drunk’s voice. It was one of his old drinking buddies who almost always goes to the same tavern each night, the Broken Branch,” Talitha said.

“Anyone know this tavern?” Sabine asked.

“It’s in the merchant district, not the slums. I’ve been there once or twice, it’s nothing special,” one of the soldiers from the patrol said. A couple of others nodded. Leave it to soldiers to know where all the taverns in town were.

“Eshan, can you hear me?” Sabine asked, crouching next to the man.

Spitting out a mouthful of blood, Eshan croaked out a reply. “I can hear you.”

“Tell me, Eshan, how do I know you’re telling the truth here? Odds are, you’re just making this up to try and save your sorry hide. Either that, or you’re setting us up for an ambush,” Sabine said.

“I just know what I heard, and Gusam’s voice has a lisp that’s hard to miss. Let me go and I’ll lead you there myself,” Eshan offered.

“No thanks. The last thing I need is you running around town blabbing to the first Silent Blade you see. I’ll tell you what, if you can give us any useful information, and if your information is I good, I promise that I won’t kill you,” Sabine offered.

“Sure, ma’am. I’ll take that deal. About the only other thing I could tell you is that they led me below the tavern, down past even the cellars. From the smell, I’d say we were somewhere near the sewers when they finally pulled the hood off me,” Eshan said.

Sabine’s mind raced, calculating odds and strategies. They couldn’t risk an open confrontation, not with the town guard ready to pounce at any disturbance. Reforged already had one lord of the city that they were on unfriendly terms with.

A war between a gang and a mercenary band smack in the middle of the merchant district would be a bad idea. One wrong move and their contract would be revoked, leaving them destitute and disgraced. Sabine had no desire to become a prisoner, spending the rest of her undead existence fighting in the arena for the amusement of the citizens of Tarasan.
